Artist statement My art practice reflects my interest in the mechanics of imagery (how images work) as well as my fascination with the visual complexity of nature. My work is shaped by the interaction between the two mediums of photography and painting and my creative process involves a kind of back and forth between these two mediums. My practice is equally informed by the influence that both painting and photography have had on the use of imagery and representation in art. In my work I use images to articulate a visual experience of the world as a kind of physical s ensation. For me, certain types of visual experience can evoke an almost tactile response. In most of my work I attempt to bring about this kind of sensation partly by depicting my subject matter life-size. It is important to me that my paintings provoke an awareness of the viewer's physical relationship to the image; a life-size scale refers to the body as central to the experience of perception and underscores "looking" as a kind of physical experience. Ultimately, my paintings are concerned with "the act of looking" and what it feels like to look out at the world. In my recent work I have been depicting images of trees and sky. I am attracted by the relative simplicity of these two elements; as quotidian elements of the natural world, they are not really landscape nor do they suggest a specifically urban or rural "scene". My goal with these works is to try to infuse seemingly arbitrary images of slightly banal subject matter with a certain resonance--one that would suggest transient moments of contemplation induced by an acute awareness of the presence of the natural world.
