Artist Statement Narration / An Open Door Since 1997 my work has evolved from the world of documentary photography to the realm of narrative images; more personal, and therefore, more ambiguous. In my latest projects I have wanted to create open-ended narratives, visual journeys, left for the viewer to decipher, to read. My images express my feelings on time passing, identity and memory, the temporal nature of existence. I often write my artist's statement after my body of work is completed. The words help me to sharpen the focus, and in most cases, to improve the edit. I draw inspiration and direction from the written word, be it prose or poetry. I have often included text as part of my presentation. I feel challenged to explore the relationship between language and image. My photographic work has often been influenced by literature. In the last few years writers like Robert Frost, Anne Michaels, Joseph Brodsky, and Mark Strand have influenced my way of looking and have brought me inspiration. Reading continually nurtures my artistic practice. In my work there is an inner dialogue, an intersection between language and image. I have always felt that images could inform the written word and vice versa. In this short visual "essay", the title, tanto tempo senza notizie di te, is essential to understanding the images. The words add a certain dimension to the images, giving them a specific context, a kind of note to a loved one. Intimate. One could argue whether this context is essential, but for me, given my connection to the Italian landscape, the Italian language becomes part of the meaning, and thus, part of the image. Narration implies something personal, a voice telling a story. This approach allows the viewer/reader to access the work in a more direct, less didactic way, and to fuel the imagination. An open door.
