Cal Lane

Images

Cal Lane was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1968 and raised in Saanichton, British Columbia. Cal Lane’s artistic practice examines social and cultural ideas by working with visual codes. She appreciates how three-dimensional form involves the space we are in, how it becomes a part of the world, without an obvious function.

Trained as a welder and artist, she obtained her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) in 2001 and a Masters of Fine Arts from the State University of New York at Purchase in 2005. Lane has exhibited her work nationally and internationally in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the Museum of Art and Design (New York, 2007), Textile Museum of Canada, Koffler Gallery (Toronto, Ontario, 2006). Upcoming exhibitions include the Musee des Manufactures de Dentelles (Retournac, France), and the Musea Brugge (Brugge, Belgium).

She has garnered several grants, scholarships, fellowships and awards, including the 2001 Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award from the International Sculpture Center in Hamilton, New Jersey, and most recently the 2007 Joseph S. Stauffer Prize from Canada Council for the Arts. Cal Lane is represented by Gallery Art Mûr in Montréal.
